Maribyrnong Council’s Public Art Strategy 2019-2029 focuses our relationship with public art, and advocates the value of a quality collection and program of both permanent and temporary (including event-based) public art.

We invest in public art, temporal and permanent, to enliven and enrich public places, foster creative communities, and stage inclusive and progressive public conversations.

Forming a part of Maribyrnong’s new Arts and Culture Strategy 2018-2023, the Public Art Strategy establishes a framework for commissioning and funding future artworks, and how Maribyrnong will continue to care for its public art, including works of heritage.

It profiles public art as critical community infrastructure and aims to ensure public art projects are included in new developments where appropriate. Looking forward, collaboration in place-based practice and sharing of resources between all of Maribyrnong’s stakeholders will be needed to ensure we have quality public art, whether it is ephemeral, permanent, new or existing, to transform and enhance our city.
