Requesting Parking Restrictions
Request for a parking change
For the consideration of changes to timed parking restrictions in a residential street, an initial level of community support is required to be demonstrated. This support is to be in the form of a letter signed by at least:
- 10% of properties (or 5 properties — whichever is greater) in streets without prior parking consultation undertaken in the past 12 months, or
- 50% of properties in streets where a parking change or parking consultation have been conducted in the past 12 months
The letter should include the following:
- Acknowledgement of the annual fees associated with Parking Permit/s (Apply for a Residential or Visitor Parking Permit - Maribyrnong)
- Acknowledgement that Parking Restrictions does not create additional on street parking spaces. Spaces available will still be freely used by all.
- The reasons for the request and why it is believed that parking restrictions will benefit the local community
- The type of change requested i.e. ‘2P, 8am – 6pm, Monday – Friday’. Note: Parking Officers operating hours are from 8am to 11pm.
- Names and addresses of the signatories to the letter
Consideration of a parking change
Once a request has been received, Council may decide to undertake a parking occupancy survey to determine the supply and demand of parking use within a particular street.
An occupancy rate
- Of up to 85% is considered acceptable and optimal in a residential environment.
- Should the rate be above 85%, Council will initiate a formal consultation process with residents of the street to determine their support for parking restriction changes.
Implementation of a proposed parking restriction change is subject to participation from at least 40 per cent of properties surveyed and support for the proposal from at least 60 per cent of respondents.
Implementation of a parking change
The residents of affected properties will then be advised of Council’s decision based on the level of support for the change.
If successful, parking signage will be installed at least a month from this notice, so that residents can apply & receive their Parking Permit applications.
