Council services and the NDIS

With the introduction of the NDIS in Maribyrnong in October 2018, we have been reviewing how we can best support our community.

Community consultations

Between August and December 2017, we hosted an online forum, alongside a postcard survey and a public meeting to help develop recommendations on our potential role in the NDIS, and to discuss what the roll-out of the scheme means for our community. The meeting was attended by 35 clients, their carers and family members.

The outcomes of the online forum, postcards and public meeting were a key input for the evaluation of our role and in establishing how we best support residents.

Council's decision

At the Council meeting on 24 July 2018, Maribyrnong City Council decided not to register as an NDIS provider.

Why have we made this decision?

The national aged care and disability reforms make it difficult for local councils to continue as providers, with challenges including funding instability and competition from a diverse range of new providers. There is evidence that other providers will be better placed to provide a comprehensive and quality service in the new funding environment. No other metropolitan council has registered to become an NDIS provider.

This process will place us in the best position to support our clients and community in the lead up to the national reforms.

What will happen to the Council services I currently receive?

If you are eligible for the NDIS, the supports you currently receive from us will continue until you are assessed as eligible and have an individual support plan developed and approved. We will work closely with you and support you to transition to the NDIS.

If you are not eligible for the NDIS, Council’s decision will not affect the services currently provided to you. You will continue to receive the same standard of care and services that you do today.
