Boys Don't Cry

To mark the 2020 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign, West-side women’s choir Pitchface present their cover of ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ by The Cure.

Written in 1979 by Robert Smith, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ highlights the way that men and boys in society have traditionally been brought up to hide their emotions. There is now strong evidence from organisations including OurWatch and VicHealth that these stereotyped constructions of masculinity do great harm to men and boys, and are drivers of violence against women.

The song is a call to action to free men and boys from outdated stereotypes around what it means to be a man, and to build a safer and more equal society. Pitchface’s performance is supported by Council and Respect Victoria’s Respect Women: Call it Out campaign.  Edited by Zac Grant and sound mix by Joe Hammond.
