Flooding, including flash floods, presents significant risks to the Maribyrnong community. Areas such as Seddon, Yarraville, Braybrook, and Maidstone are particularly vulnerable due to limited drainage capacity and increasing population density.

How to prepare:

  • Stay informed using reliable sources like the Bureau of Meteorology and VicEmergency.

  • Protect your property:
    • Clear gutters, drains, and downpipes to prevent blockages.
    • Install sandbags and weatherproof seals on doors and windows.
    • Regularly inspect roofs, gutters, and drains for blockages and potential damage or leaks.
  • Familiarise yourself with flood-prone areas using resources like the Local Flood Guide

  • Have backup power options:
    • Portable chargers for electronic devices.
    • Consider a generator for essential appliances.
  • Identify safe evacuation routes and discuss plans with family members:
    • Map out high ground locations for vehicles and valuables.
    • Ensure household members know where to meet if separated.
  • Assemble an emergency kit with essentials:
    • Non-perishable food and water (for at least three days).
    • Flashlights, batteries, and a portable phone charger.
    • First aid supplies and necessary medications.
    • Copies of important documents like insurance policies.
  • Sign up for flood warning notifications through VicEmergency.

During a Flood:

  • Turn off electricity, gas, and water supplies if it is safe to do so.
  • Relocate to higher ground and listen to emergency broadcasts for updates.
  • Never enter floodwaters; even shallow water can be dangerous.
