The vision for Stony Creek is one step closer with the adoption of the Stony Creek Future Directions Plan 2020 at Tuesday’s City Development Special Committee meeting (25 February).

Community safety and better use of public spaces throughout the City of Maribyrnong is our priority. This Plan has been developed to improve accessibility along the creek where people can engage with the natural and cultural heritage of the site.

Stony Creek is a vital waterway in our evolving city, flowing from the west through Braybrook, Tottenham, West Footscray and Yarraville to reach the Yarra River near the West Gate Bridge.

There has been extensive community engagement on the future of Stony Creek.The Plan received a high level of interest, with approximately 200 people completing online surveys and 80 people attending information sessions throughout the City. The majority of actions in the plan were ranked as 'important' or 'very important' by most respondents.

The Plan recommends new improvements to accessibility, including a pedestrian bridge at Cala Street, West Footscray, which will create safe linkages between paths and neighbourhoods on the north and south banks.

Further recommendations include new rain gardens and wetlands to help improve water quality of the creek and to increase flora and fauna in the local area.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter, said that this is a positive step for Stony Creek.

“The Stony Creek Future Directions Plan is an exciting project that supports us in working to ensure our community has access to safe and welcoming natural spaces throughout our City. The endorsement of the Plan is a positive step forward in building safe and sustainable infrastructure for our entire community to enjoy,” Cr Carter said.
