Recovery update
Published on 23 August 2019
The EPA has now issued a clean-up notice that requires the landowner to remove all high risk waste from the premises by 17 August 2020.
Regular inspections continue to be carried out to monitor conditions in the creek.
All remaining stockpiles of treated sediment at the fire site have now been transported to a secure landfill site nominated by EPA. In total, approximately 2,500 cubic metres of contaminated sediment has been removed from the fire site since March. A total of 232 truckloads – equating to three tonnes – of treated sediment has been transported to landfill over the last five months.
Melbourne Water and EPA continue to conduct assessments to understand the scope and extent of further remediation works between the fire site and Paramount Road. Contaminated land and waterway specialists have been commissioned to assist with this task.
A community event to launch the final plan will be held in Cruickshank Park on Sunday 8 September, 11am - 2pm. Join us for a BBQ, planting activities and educational activities for kids of all ages. Come along to find out what rehabilitation actions are already underway, what's planned for the next 12 months, and how you can get involved. Staff from Council, Melbourne Water and EPA Victoria will be there to answer any questions you may have about the recovery and rehabilitation of Stony Creek. Details for the community event can be found on Melbourne Water’s Your Say page.
