Recovery update

Published on 21 December 2018

On Thursday, EPA conducted an additional inspection of the fire site and downstream parts of Stony Creek following the heavy rainfall. This inspection was to confirm the effectiveness of site controls and no contaminants were observed to be leaving the site.

Engineering works to the site stormwater system have now been completed, to replace the temporary controls installed to contain contaminated water on-site and divert clean stormwater around the site.

EPA officers are continuing to inspect the fire site regularly, to monitor compliance with statutory notices and ensure appropriate management of risk.

Melbourne Water is continuing to work closely with EPA to remove upstream sources of contamination between the fire site and Paramount Road.

Vegetation removal works, upstream near the fire site, continued this week and the remaining trees will be removed in January.

Results for samples collected 29 November have just been received and will be assessed over the next few days. The next EPA web page update will include these results as well as results from an additional two sampling events that have not yet been released.

Melbourne Water will be closed for the holiday period, from Monday 24 December to return on Wednesday 2 January. However, inspections of the booms and hay bale bunds by our field crews will continue during the closure.

From 7 January 2019, the M102 Water Main Renewal Project will continue from Charlotte Street West through Cruickshank Park. An update about this project is available on Melbourne Water’s website.

The next update will be available on 4 January 2019 and we wish you a very happy and safe holiday season.
