Recovery update
Published on 19 July 2019
Stockpiles of contaminated sediment continue to be processed and treated at the fire site ready for disposal at a secure landfill site.
Specialists in land contamination will undertake more soil testing at the site. This will help gain insight into the impact of the remediation works and to help inform additional works if needed. Results from these tests are estimated to be back in two weeks.
Desilting works towards Paramount Road recommenced early this week as heavy rainfall in the last week caused a slight delay in progress. Despite the delay in progress this week, the remaining 200m section of the Creek is still on track to be completed by the end of this month.
Water levels were too high to be working in the Creek, so some of the week was spent reinstating access tracks that were damaged by the rain.
EPA and Melbourne Water continue to conduct risk assessment which will determine the final stages of clean up required between the fire site and Paramount Road.
EPA’s ongoing advice is:
- Avoid contact with the water in Stony Creek.
- Don’t walk along the edge of Stony Creek.
- Don't let pets swim in the area or drink the water.
- As a precaution avoid eating fish from Stony Creek.
- Seek medical help if you feel unwell.
You can help shape the future of Stony Creek by providing feedback on the draft Rehabilitation Plan. Community feedback will be incorporated into the final plan to ensure it aligns with expectations, values and aspirations.
Visit Melbourne Water’s Your Say page to download a copy of the plan and submit your comments by Wednesday 31 July.
