Extreme Heat

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense. Prepare yourself and your loved ones by following the below advice.

How to prepare

  • Monitor weather forecasts and sign up for Heat Health Alerts.
  • Prepare your home:

    - Ensure air conditioning and fans are functional.
    - Install outdoor shading, such as awnings or shade sails, to lower indoor temperatures.

  • Stock up on essentials:
    - Water, sunscreen, and lightweight, breathable clothing.
    - Cooling items like portable fans, water bottles, and electrolyte drinks for a heatwave survival kit.

  • Identify cool spaces in your community, such as libraries, shopping centres, and other public areas with air conditioning.
  • Make a plan for vulnerable individuals and pets:
    - Ensure family members or neighbours who are elderly, socially isolated, or unwell have a way to stay cool and hydrated.
    - Provide pets with shaded areas and plenty of water.
  • Learn the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke to act quickly in emergencies.
  • Coordinate with neighbours to check on each other during extreme heat events, especially those at higher risk.

During Extreme Heat

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours (11 AM to 4 PM).
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently and avoiding caffeine or alcohol.
  • Keep your home cool by using curtains, fans, and minimising appliance use.
  • Use cooling methods like wet towels, ice packs, or cool showers.
  • Keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours, elderly family members, and pets.
