Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense. Prepare yourself and your loved ones by following the below advice.
How to prepare
- Monitor weather forecasts and sign up for Heat Health Alerts.
- Prepare your home:
- Ensure air conditioning and fans are functional.
- Install outdoor shading, such as awnings or shade sails, to lower indoor temperatures.

Stock up on essentials:
- Water, sunscreen, and lightweight, breathable clothing.
- Cooling items like portable fans, water bottles, and electrolyte drinks for a heatwave survival kit.
- Identify cool spaces in your community, such as libraries, shopping centres, and other public areas with air conditioning.
- Make a plan for vulnerable individuals and pets:
- Ensure family members or neighbours who are elderly, socially isolated, or unwell have a way to stay cool and hydrated.
- Provide pets with shaded areas and plenty of water.
- Learn the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke to act quickly in emergencies.
- Coordinate with neighbours to check on each other during extreme heat events, especially those at higher risk.
During Extreme Heat
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours (11 AM to 4 PM).
- Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently and avoiding caffeine or alcohol.
- Keep your home cool by using curtains, fans, and minimising appliance use.
- Use cooling methods like wet towels, ice packs, or cool showers.
- Keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours, elderly family members, and pets.
After Extreme Heat
Check for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, fatigue, or dehydration. Seek medical attention for symptoms.
