Children staying safe online
These tips can help keep you safe online.
Explore together
Ask your mum, dad, carer or a trusted adult to check out new games or apps with you the first time you use them.
Stay nearby
When you’re on a phone, tablet or computer on your own, make sure a parent or carer is close by in case you need help. Extra tip — avoid using your device alone in your bedroom.
Ask first
Always check with your mum, dad or carer before downloading, installing or buying anything online.
Protect your personal info
Don’t share your home address, school name, phone number or passwords with anyone.
Review your privacy settings and chat about what to share
Set your accounts to private and talk with your parent or carer about what kinds of photos and info are okay to post.
Cyberbullying
If someone sends you a mean message, or one that’s unkind about someone else, try not to reply or pass it on. Let an adult you trust know and check out tips on how to handle it. If you see something online that upsets you — show a parent, carer or trusted adult straight away.
Strange or upsetting messages
If someone you don’t know contacts you, or you get a message that makes you feel uneasy or unsafe, tell a trusted adult right away.
Only connect with people you know
Be careful who you add as a friend or follower. If you haven’t met them in real life, it’s best not to accept their request. Don’t meet online friends in person - it’s safer to keep online friends online. If you chat with other kids in games, don’t arrange to meet them in real life.
