General rubbish bins
What goes into your general rubbish bin?
The contents of your general rubbish (red lidded) bin are sent to landfill.
It is important that we all do our part to reduce waste as much as possible, and do not place any recyclable or compostable items in the general rubbish bin, so that valuable resources do not go to waste.
Below is a list of some items that can and cannot be placed in your general waste bin.

- Soft plastics, wrappers and plastic bags
- Single use coffee cups
- Disposable nappies
- Broken kitchenware like glasses and plates
- Broken cookware like pyrex dishes

What happens to the waste from these bins?
The contents of your general waste bin are sent to landfill. That is why it is so important to try and reduce your waste as much as possible, and recycle all items that you can.
Most of the waste from your general waste bin is sent to Cleanaway in Ravenhall (formerly known as Melbourne Regional Landfill) and some may be transported to Hansen landfill in an emergency. Council does not send any waste interstate or overseas.
