Maribyrnong City Council is now the proud owner of two new weed steamer trailers which will further reduce our reliance on chemical weedkillers.
This comes after Maribyrnong began phasing out the use of all glyphosate-based products in early 2018 - leading the way for many other Council’s in Victoria. Since then Maribyrnong has been out-sourcing weed steaming in high-use areas in the municipality, in conjunction with other methods of weed management.
Now that weed-steaming will be done in-house, it will enable us to use this method in more places - including community gardens, playgrounds, BBQ areas and exercise equipment. Council staff have received training on how to use the steaming units, which will again be used in conjunction with manual weeding, mulching and other weed suppression activities.
The steaming method uses super-heated water and wet steam to destroy weeds on contact - most importantly, it is safe to use.
A word from the Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter:
"Weed steaming is an innovative approach and is another step in the right direction for Maribyrnong, as we lead the way in phasing out harmful chemicals in our weedkillers."
