Celebrate National Tree Day – plant a tree with us!
Published on 27 July 2022
National Tree Day returns this Sunday 31 July, and after a two year hiatus due to COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, Council is supporting a community planting day at Burndap Park where we’re hoping to plant 4,000 trees.
The event is open to all ages and runs from 9.30am-2.30pm. Rug the family up and make a day of it or come down for an hour or two of fresh air to help plant some native trees, enjoy a free coffee from the coffee cart and grab a sausage sizzle from the Footscray Lions Club BBQ.
There will also be a free live wildlife show by Wild Action Zoo – an environmental activation organisation led by TV Zoologist Chris Humfrey – where children can learn more about native animals like Blue Tongue Lizards and a range of frog species.
RSVP’s are encouraged via Council’s Facebook page here. Please wear enclosed footwear and bring your own water bottle and/or keep cup and gloves for the tree planting.
Mayor, Councillor Anthony Tran is looking forward to rolling up his sleeves and getting his gloves dirty to support the event.
“Let’s green the west together! National Tree Day is such a great initiative – it brings the community together to create more beautiful green spaces for everyone to enjoy. It is also a chance for us to think about other actions we can take to help reduce environmental impacts close to home.”
Planet Ark's National Tree Day, which began in 1996, has grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event with around 26 million trees planted by five million volunteers across the country since its inception. This year’s target is one million native trees across Australia.
It is a key date on the calendar supporting efforts in greening the municipality to increase canopy cover to help reduce urban temperatures and improve biodiversity by providing more homes and food for wildlife. The annual planting season – which takes place now, over the cooler months – is in full swing and is supported by Council’s Urban Forest Strategy.
