Unique third Mayoral term for long-serving Councillor
Published on 10 November 2022
Another mayoral first for the City of Maribyrnong, with the election of Cr Sarah Carter as Mayor for the next 12 months.
Elected unopposed, this will be Cr Sarah Carter’s third mayoral term in her 15 years of service with Maribyrnong City Council.
She is also the first third-time female Mayor, not just in the history of Maribyrnong, but also its predecessor, the City of Footscray.
Councillors recognised Cr Carter’s election as a wonderful achievement and remarkable feat not achieved in 163 years of civic administration in the municipality.
Mayor Carter said she was looking forward to serving as Mayor for a third time.
“For all the joy that being appointed Mayor brings me, it is a great responsibility to undertake and one that I do not take lightly. I want to express my sincere gratitude to my fellow councillors for putting their faith in me for the third time. It’s a great source of pride to me to be the first woman in the Council’s history to achieve this feat,” Mayor Carter said.
Since she was first elected in 2008, Cr Carter has twice previously served as Mayor – first in 2011 and most recently in 2020. She has been Deputy Mayor to outgoing Mayor, Cr Anthony Tran, during 2022.
She is only the second Mayor in Maribyrnong’s history to serve a third term. The first was Cr Michael Clarke in 2021.
Councillor Carter has been a passionate advocate for a proposed new performing arts and cultural hub for the west and festivals and activations that foster a thriving community.
She also plays a significant role as Council’s Equity Ambassador.
Her focus for the coming year will be on delivering high-quality amenities and infrastructure to support the community’s wellbeing.
“This mayoral term I will be advocating for the construction of a performing arts space with a 500-seat plus capacity. Our municipality has been without a cultural facility of this type for far too long,” Mayor Carter said. “I also aim to explore how we can reimagine and optimise our existing open spaces and acquire more for the community. I will seek to focus on initiatives that prioritise our community’s wellbeing and the provision of high quality amenity and community infrastructure. Getting the basics right and to the highest standards is my motto,” she continued.
Cr Cuc Lam was elected Deputy Mayor.
