The transformative conversion of a section of Birmingham Street in Yarraville into useable open space is now complete.

The project saw a closed section between Avoca Street and Pentland Parade into a pocket park, providing a vibrant open space for the local neighbours to enjoy.

The new park includes a garden bed and tree planting to effectively separate the bicycle lane and pedestrian path, improving functionality and visual appeal of the space. Additionally, a generously sized central lawn area provides a welcoming space for relaxation, seating, and participation in a range of recreational activities.

Careful attention was given to sightlines throughout the pocket park, promoting passive surveillance to create a sense of safety and openness. Lighting has also been installed along the bicycle path and the eastern footpath.

Additionally, features at the southern end of the park have been designed to accommodate students moving between the two school campuses of St Augustine’s Primary School, prioritising their access to quality open space.

The new pocket park also showcases sustainable practices with the inclusion of a raingarden, serving as a natural filtration system for stormwater.

The park development aligns with Council’s Open Space Strategy, Urban Forest Strategy and Maribyrnong Bicycle Strategy, which aim to create and enhance the City's open spaces and connectivity.

Construction was supported by a $1.09 million grant from the Victorian Government's Local Parks Program.
