Hiding in plain sight on streets across the City are 13 new additions to Maribyrnong’s public art collection. Traffic signal boxes have been transformed by local artists as part of Council’s pilot StopMOTION project within the StreetWORKS program.
The artists’ eye catching and beautiful designs were inspired by the location of their specific traffic signal box. The project aims to individualise spaces through public art that expresses local character and place distinction, and some artists drew inspiration from the site’s history, some referenced the surrounding architecture, while others reflected nearby activities and the natural environment.
All commissioned artists attended a one-day online workshop on street art professional practice which included a panel with experts in heritage, First Nations and local flora/fauna. Individualised support was provided one on one with professional artist mentors, Justine McAllister and Chuck Mayfield, during the development and installation phases.
StopMOTION was intended to support a large number of our local creative sector post-COVID-19 with small artwork commissions that enliven and beautify our City.
We congratulate the commissioned artists:

“StopMotion is an exciting project that not only adds colour and movement to our beautiful City, but also supports local artists with professional development and mentorship.”
