State of climate emergency acknowledged

Published on 07 March 2019

Maribyrnong City Council stepped up its position on global warming at the Ordinary Council Meeting 19 February, acknowledging that we are in a state of ‘climate emergency’ that requires urgent action by all levels of government.

The acknowledgement was followed by the resolution that Council will develop a briefing report on how to best act on the ‘climate emergency’.

Maribyrnong is now one of about 350 Councils in the world that support the campaign Council Action in the Climate Emergency.

The campaign encourages Councils to play a key role in leading the climate emergency response through education, reduction of emissions and building community resilience against some global warming impacts.

Continuing to achieve zero carbon emissions and phasing out single-use plastics are two ways Maribyrnong City Council is combatting global warming.

Council resolved to phase out single-use plastics at Council run events at the recent Ordinary Council Meeting. This will eventuate in plastic straws, balloons, polystyrene cups and bowls, disposable coffee cups and plastic bottles replaced with more sustainable options such as paper straws and bags, cardboard boxes and mugs over the next three years.

Maribyrnong City Council reduced its corporate CO2e emissions to zero for the first time in the 2014/15 financial year, delivering on the main commitment of our Carbon Neutral Action Plan (2008).

A few words from the Mayor, Cr Martin Zakharov:

It is imperative that Council play our part locally, and continue to look at ways we can lower our emissions and achieve sustainability.
