Along with daily sweeping, Council is now also pressure washing the footpaths and clearing general rubbish and emptying bins on a daily basis to keep Nicholson Mall in Central Footscray looking spick and span.

We understand the importance of cleanliness in our activity centres and acknowledge that visitors and traders have not always been happy with the area's presentation, as highlighted in the latest annual community survey.

Mayor Cr Cuc Lam said we’ve heard the concerns and have been working to implement a routine that can meet the needs of our community while remaining sustainable for Council.

“Ensuring the cleanliness of our activity centres, especially those located in the heart of our City, remains a top priority as we strive to create safe and welcoming neighbourhoods in Maribyrnong,” Mayor Lam said. “Nicholson Mall is now looking amazing and we’ll be working to keep it looking that way.”

Council is partnering with coHealth on strategies to support vulnerable members of our community who are in need of enhanced support, particularly concerning, housing, employment and related services.

Safety concerns within the mall have also been raised in the annual survey, an issue that Council takes very seriously. It is working closely with Victoria Police to explore opportunities for enhancing public safety within the activity centre while simultaneously seeking long-term solutions to better support our community and their experience of our public spaces.

“Keeping Footscray’s CBD safe for everyone who works, visits or lives there, is a priority for us, with targeted operations continuing to manage anti-social behaviour.

“Keeping the area clean and tidy is also an important element in discouraging bad behaviour and we welcome Council’s efforts in this regard.”
