A shovel was used to move the first bit of dirt ahead of construction of a new Splash Park and Waterslides at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC).

Mayor, Councillor Anthony Tran was joined by Footscray MP Katie Hall to turn the first sod, ahead of early works scheduled to begin in November.

The MAC already attracts close to one million visitors per year.

The new 400 square metre interactive splash park, which includes two water slides, will be built just to the right of the Aquatic Centre and will provide more water based entertainment for locals and visitors from across Melbourne to enjoy.

Additional change rooms will also be incorporated with wet, dry and accessible options, to support the increased patronage.

The new waterslides and splash park follow the recent $1.3 million dollar upgrades to the MAC interior in 2021, which saw the change rooms fully refurbished as well as a revamp of the main entrance foyer.

$4 million has been provided from State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program to support the project which will cost $10.2 million dollars, with the remainder funded by Council.

Construction will take just under 12 months with the new splash park ready for use by summer of next year.

The Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre Splash Park and Waterslides project is jointly funded by the Victorian State Government.

Message from the Mayor, Councillor Anthony Tran

The past two years have been challenging for our community, with the impacts of the pandemic continuing to be felt by many. The new splash park, with its two waterslides, will provide another way for our community to come together, relax, have fun, and enjoy safe water play right in their own backyard.
