Sarah Carter Memorial Page Launched to Gather Community Tributes
Published on 09 August 2024
Recognising the significant outpouring of sentiment following the sudden passing of long-serving councillor, Sarah Carter, Council has today established an online memorial page to capture community tributes.
Mayor Councillor Cuc Lam said Councillor Carter was a trusted and valued colleague and friend, whose sudden passing has shocked and saddened staff, councillors, and many in the community. It is clear from the outpouring of grief of the high regard in which she was held by those she worked so hard to support.
“Sarah was a passionate advocate. There was never any doubt how much she cared for her local community and how proud she was to represent the West. Her dedication to advancing community wellbeing, arts and culture and gender equity, in particular, were second to none.
“It has been incredibly heartening to read the hundreds of tributes received directly by myself, my colleagues, staff, and on social media recognising Sarah’s dedication and commitment to the City of Maribyrnong, her passion for her community, and her drive for creating positive change,” she said.
The launching of the memorial page is a way of capturing this sentiment, Mayor Lam said, with a view to sharing with Sarah’s family.
“We plan to collate all the amazing comments we are hearing so that, when they feel ready, they may also read and appreciate the many wonderful things that are being said and understand the very high regard and depth of feeling being demonstrated within our community at this time,” Mayor Lam said.
Members of our community, those who worked alongside or had the privilege of working with Councillor Carter, are warmly invited to post any memories, stories or tributes through our website at: Councillor Carter’s tribute page
Council will also be holding a Special Council Meeting next Tuesday 13 August, which will be livestreamed, where councillors will share their personal stories and tributes.
Council has also heard the calls from our community for some form of memorial and, at an appropriate time, will be considering what a permanent tribute to honour the life of Sarah Carter in our City may look like.
