A new shared use access path for pedestrians and cyclists has been constructed at Cranwell Reserve, Braybrook, providing safe access to the Maribyrnong River Trail – a vital walkway along the Maribyrnong River in the west.

The City of Maribyrnong is home to over 150 open spaces, covering more than 307 hectares of land. Cranwell Reserve is a large, green open space in Braybrook with great views over the Maribyrnong River valley. The area includes access to the Maribyrnong River Trail and an outdoor playground, along with public facilities such as a barbeque area, seating, and a drinking fountain.

This new 330 metre long path winds across the steep grade near Lacy Street, Braybrook, with new concrete replacing the old gravel maintenance path to provide a safer and more functional surface for residents accessing the space. The path is complete with new line-marking, path decals, and guard rails for safety. Fresh landscaping will soon be installed to further enhance the aesthetics of the area and to provide environments for native wildlife.

This new path is in line with Council’s Open Space Strategy which outline the strategic direction for the future planning, provision, design and management of open space in the City of Maribyrnong from 2013 to 2031. It also supports Council’s Bicycle Strategy 2020-2030, a 10 year plan to encourage cycling in Maribyrnong by creating a safe and inviting environment for all riders.

Further developments in the area will include the construction of a new path – continuing safe walking access along the riverside – along the Maribyrnong River near the Medway Golf Course.

Message from the Mayor, Cr Michael Clarke

The Maribyrnong River Trail is a popular destination for locals and visitors to the area, and I am in no doubt this new shared access path will be welcomed and enjoyed by users in the area, especially with the warmer weather. Helping ensure residents have access to sustainable infrastructure that promotes active transport, and is safe and functional, is a key part of supporting happy and healthy community for generations to come.
