Post flood clean up continues in Maribyrnong
Published on 21 October 2022
The flood clean up continues in Maribyrnong, and taps have been installed on fire hydrants through the flood impacted area to provide fresh drinking water and to support the clean-up works.
They have been installed throughout Maribyrnong, including along the Maribyrnong River Trail and The Esplanade, at the intersection of Clyde and Leopold streets, at the Chifley Drive end of Clyde Street, and on Raleigh Road.
Greater Western Water has confirmed the water in the flood affected area of Maribyrnong is safe to drink. The installation of taps on fire hydrants has been done to facilitate access to fresh water to support the clean-up works, and for drinking if required, not because of any issues with the water quality. Though it is recommended if the water coming from pipes on your property appears dirty or cloudy to use bottled, boiled or disinfected water, and call a plumber to remedy.
Council continues to collect hard waste materials that have been stockpiled on nature strips by residents, with more than 1500 tonnes (just over 4,000 cubic metres) collected so far and more to come. All the hard waste collected is being sorted before appropriate disposal.
Street cleaning and hard waste collections will continue throughout the flood affected area over the weekend and into next week.
Portable toilet blocks have also been set up at various points, including at the intersection of Newstead Street and The Esplanade; Coulson Gardens near Chifley Drive; along The Esplanade between Navigator and Clyde streets; along Chifley Drive near Anglers Way; and along Burton Crescent, near Burton Crescent.
The relief centre at Maribyrnong Community Centre will remain open over the weekend. Personal care packs, including a range of toiletries, are available for collection and Orange Sky Australia is providing a free mobile laundry on site tomorrow (Saturday 22 October) between 10am-3pm for residents to bring clothing and linen to be washed and dried.
Council is providing a range of food trucks that will roam Maribyrnong over the weekend to provide food to residents and volunteers, and services like financial support, property structural assessments and recovery support will be accessible at the centre.
Floodwaters appear to have affected the mechanism that supports the operation of the drinking fountain along the Maribyrnong Walking Trail, and we are working on this.
Facilities at Henry Turner North and South, Footscray Boating Club and Maribyrnong Reserve are among those closed to public use currently, until further notice.
Parks infrastructure, such as playgrounds, BBQ’s and picnic facilities along the Maribyrnong River Trail, including Newells Paddock, Footscray Park and Pipemakers Park, are also unable to be used until cleaning can be undertaken.
The relief centre at Maribyrnong Community Centre, located at 9 Randall Street, Maribyrnong, is open between 9am-5pm to provide ongoing assistance to residents.
Flood impacted residents can also email recovery@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au with specific requests or concerns. This inbox is monitored weekdays 9am-5pm.
Message from the Mayor, Councillor Anthony Tran
We always knew this would take time. But we are working our way progressively through the flood area cleaning up as we go. There is still a long road ahead of us, but we are doing all we can to help our community get through this, together.
It has been phenomenal to see so many members of our community also doing their bit to help their neighbours. We’ve always known Maribyrnong is a caring community but we are certainly seeing this demonstrated in spades in the aftermath of this devastating flood event. I could not be more proud of the way our community has come together to support impacted residents in their hour of need.
