Maribyrnong River Flood: Two years on
Published on 14 October 2024
As we reflect on the second anniversary of the Maribyrnong floods, we recognise what a challenging time it has been, and continues to be, for many in the community.
More than 500 properties were impacted when the Maribyrnong River breached its banks in the early hours of 14 October 2022 with hundreds of residents displaced. Many are still unable to return to their homes or are grappling with ongoing challenges related to insurance and repairs.
Maribyrnong City Council Chief Executive Officer, Celia Haddock, said it is timely to reflect not only on the impact the flood has had, but also the way our community pulled together and is planning for the future.
“The spirit of collaboration we have seen – where neighbours have come together to support one another – truly exemplifies the close-knit nature of our community. The strength and resilience residents have shown during this two year journey has been incredible – recognising for many the challenges continue,” she said.
A Community Recovery Committee (CRC) – comprising representatives from the community - was established in the wake of the flood to provide guidance and support to Council to help address issues and barriers that hinder recovery and advocate for positive outcomes.
CRC member, Andrew Monteiro, also acknowledged the way our community banded together then, and continues to support one another, two years on.
“The way the community rallied - dropping off food and care packs, offering support with washing linen and clothes, and others assisting with the clean-up of properties – is truly worth celebrating. It is the spirit of this community that underpins our resilience,” Mr Monteiro said.
Council, with guidance from the CRC, has delivered a number of initiatives to aid with recovery including rates rebates, outreach support programs, community events, and skill building workshops, but CEO Celia Haddock also acknowledged the ongoing challenges, particularly for residents rebuilding their homes and those who have not been able to begin repair works.
Council remains committed alongside Melbourne Water, the State Emergency Service (SES), and the State Government to advocate for better outcomes for our community going forward.
A community event marking the two year anniversary took place on 13 October.
