Diving into our aquatic future: Aquatic Strategy adopted
Published on 13 December 2023
Council has adopted the Maribyrnong Aquatic Strategy, which includes the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre Master Plan ensuring aquatic facilities and services offered in our municipality address current and future community needs.
The Strategy cements the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC) as the only Council-owned aquatic facility in the municipality, and considers the role of surrounding municipalities and other community providers such as Victoria University in providing affordable and accessible facilities.
The Strategy will also guide the future direction and decision-making for the MAC to ensure it meets current industry standards and 21st century aquatic facility expectations. This includes enhanced fitness, training, education, therapy, recreation, leisure and adventure offerings.
Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam, said the goal is to ensure the MAC is environmentally and financially sustainable, supports participation and inclusion, and provides economic benefits to the wider community.
"We know our community is passionate about sport and recreation so we are pleased to reaffirm our commitment to supporting health and wellbeing by delivering a contemporary aquatic centre that meets the needs of all residents.
“MAC has served the community well for 17 years but it is now in need of some upgrades to cater for current and future residents. We know that without change, it cannot continue to serve our community in a way that they deserve,” she said.
A funding strategy will be developed to identify opportunities to fund the implementation of all the elements identified in the MAC Master Plan.
This includes transitioning from gas to renewable alternatives by 2025 in line with Council’s Climate Emergency Policy 2020-2025.
