The reconstruction of Joseph Road will commence in late March 2024, with Council awarding the contract for the works at the February Council Meeting.

These works will span from Hopkins Street to the Heavenly Queen Temple in the Joseph Road Precinct, and will deliver enhanced public amenities, street lighting, upgraded roads, bicycle connections, drainage systems, pedestrian footpaths, a new footpath bridge connection to Hopkins Street, and upgraded public spaces to enhance safety, accessibility, and urban design.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said the project will create a dynamic and engaging community space extending beyond the precinct.

“The Joseph Road Precinct holds immense potential for our community, and these upgrades will help showcase that,” said Mayor Lam. “These works will create a greater accessibility to the Maribyrnong River trail, open spaces, and commercial businesses within the Precinct as the community grows.”

“By enhancing infrastructure and public spaces, we are not only improving safety and accessibility, but also fostering a sense of community in this developing precinct. We will work with developers throughout the project phases, ensuring a collaborative effort to achieve the best possible outcome for local residents," Mayor Lam continued.

Part of the broader Joseph Road Public Realm Project, these comprehensive works will further transform this formally industrial space into a mixed-use precinct, accommodating a blend of residential, office, retail, recreation, and public open spaces.

Works are currently programmed for completion in December 2024. Information about the Joseph Road Precinct works and potential detours will be shared with local residents in advance of the works starting.

Other works in the Footscray area include the improvement works of Cowper Street, also due to start in late March 2024.
