Grass growing under our feet - literally

Maintenance staff on drivable lawn mower tending to a centre medium

Due to the combination of a wet winter and recent spring sun, we’re seeing our parks and open spaces flush with new growth.

On top of a bumper grass growing season the recent flood event has interfered with our regular maintenance cycle and we appreciate there are areas still waiting to be attended to.

We’ve been delayed in part by diverting resources to support flood impacted residents with the clean- up, but also because of the significant impact on public spaces, including the likes of Footscray Park and Coulson Reserve, which were also inundated.

Crews have worked around the clock to support the clean-up, clearing thousands of cubic metres of hard waste and green waste from city streets and mud and slurry from roads and drains.

120,000 cubic metres of debris has also been removed from open spaces to support their safe return to the community. While they’re again available for use, they are in many cases, still too soggy for us to attempt to mow, just yet. This is particularly true of the lower lying areas where it is not possible for us to get in the mowers until they dry out.

We understand that grass and weeds are growing at a rapid pace and we’d like to thank residents for their patience while we balance the flood recovery requirements with regular maintenance duties.

We’re getting the work done as fast as we can with crews prioritising areas for active play, training, and passive spaces with high foot traffic where they can so they are again able to be used as we enter the summer months. We’re also working to catch up on mowing and weeding those areas outside the flood zone that were delayed to support the immediate flood response.
