Council has launched the Accredited Gluten-Free Dining Project, a collaborative effort with Coeliac Australia and Victoria University aimed at establishing a safe and trustworthy dining experience for those with gluten sensitivities.

The City of Maribyrnong is the first municipality to implement an accreditation program setting a new benchmark for gluten-free dining.

The initiative responds to challenges individuals with coeliac disease highlighted in a recent survey by Coeliac Australia that revealed:

  • 88.5% of respondents experience anxiety when dining out.
  • 55% wish they could eat out more often.
  • 95% conduct research prior to choosing a restaurant.
  • Only 10% trust gluten-free claims made by restaurants.

By partnering with Coeliac Australia, Council aims to empower restaurants with the knowledge and skills needed to provide authentic gluten-free options, providing a greater level of confidence to diners around allergen management in local food businesses.

The Accredited Gluten-Free Dining Project not only addresses the safety of gluten-free dining but also promotes Maribyrnong as a premier gluten-free destination – ensuring local restaurants meet rigorous standards for gluten-free offerings, providing peace of mind to diners.

Additionally, Council has partnered with Victoria University’s Dietetics Unit, where students work closely with local businesses to identify gluten-containing ingredients and assist in meeting accreditation requirements. This collaboration will see the Coeliac Australia Accreditation Program integrated into Victoria University's curriculum, making it the only university in Australia to do so.

Two local venues have already achieved accreditation, Campground Kitchen located at 9 Errol Street, Braybrook, and Cupcake Central located at Level 2, Highpoint Shopping Centre, Maribyrnong. As more restaurants gain accreditation, they will be listed on Coeliac Australia’s website, ensuring diners can easily find safe gluten-free options.

This program is fully funded by Council, reinforcing its commitment to community health and safety and is open to businesses located in the City of Maribyrnong. By joining, local businesses will receive the support needed to gain gluten-free accreditation, ensuring gluten-free claims meet the highest safety standards. Accreditation will add a competitive edge and increased exposure to a wider customer base for participating businesses.

Council will also be presenting at the upcoming Coeliac Australia Gluten-Free Expo, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 5-6 October 2024, so drop by for a chat if you have any questions.
