Footscray’s new pontoon is afloat

Residents will be able to enjoy the magic of Maribyrnong River atop of a newly installed floating pontoon in Footscray.

Situated 100 meters north of the Hopkins Street Bridge along the Maribyrnong River Trail, the new pontoon boasts views of both the City and the striking Heavenly Queen Temple and is already a popular spot for walkers, cyclists and photographers alike.

The new pontoon will allow locals to have an enhanced connection to the river and support the safe use of water sports equipment and small boats along the river.

The Footscray river edge was identified by Maribyrnong City Council as the perfect location for the pontoon as it connects directly to the major new residential precinct on Joseph Road, which is expected to house an additional 5,700 residents in Maribyrnong over the next ten years.

The $270,500 project is funded in part by the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources with a grant of $120,000 from the Boating Safety and Facilities Program.

A word from the Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam:

“The pontoon is a great addition to the popular Maribyrnong River Trail and I’m sure locals and visitors alike will enjoy using it – especially in the warmer months.

“Council expects to see a housing boom in our City over the next decade and I am pleased that we are planning ahead to accommodate our next generation of residents.”
