Sharing our vision for the existing Footscray Hospital site
Published on 27 March 2024
The existing Footscray Hospital has a significant connection to our community, so Council is keen to ensure our advocacy for the site’s future aligns with the community’s priorities for the site.
The majority of the site, except for a portion of the car park that belongs to Council, is currently owned by the State Government and they have recently finished consultation with the community to help inform their assessment for the future of the 6.6 hectare land and buildings, prior to the opening of the new hospital in 2025.
While the State Government will ultimately have the final say on the site’s future, Council has incorporated preliminary feedback from the community into a draft Advocacy Plan to ensure the future uses of the site meet community needs now and in the future.
“The draft identifies housing and open space as the two of the key priorities, recognising there are some constraints with what can be achieved given that much of the grounds are an old quarry and former landfill,” Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said. “We’re now sharing the document to understand if we’ve accurately reflected what you would like to see happen to the existing Footscray Hospital site, so we can champion your vision,” Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said.
The draft Advocacy Plan has been informed by community feedback and ideas from community groups, and aligns to existing Council plans such as the Open Space Strategy 2014 (including subsequent reviews), Walking Strategy 2023-2033 and the Climate Emergency Action Plan 2021-2025.
It includes a draft site visioning map, with 10 points of interest for use on the existing hospital site in the future. Highlights include the potential allocation for housing, a municipal park with 3.65 ha of open space, safe walking routes, cycling paths and multiple gathering areas.
