Council is looking at ways to improve access to, and use of, community sports infrastructure by women and girls in our community.

The first draft of a new Fair Access Policy aims to ensure equitable access to all Council-owned facilities that deliver community sports by implementing welcoming, accessible and inclusive environments, while also ensuring appropriate infrastructure to support women and girls. This includes, for example, female friendly change facilities and equitable training and competition timetabling.

City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said the Policy would help ensure women are able to fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of community sport, with fair opportunity and access to their local facilities.

“Sport is a valued feature of our community’s culture and identity, and every member of our community should have the infrastructure, access and support they need to participate.

Sport and active recreation provide opportunities for enriching out communities through the promotion of respect and fair mindedness for all people, while also supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of everyone in our community,” Mayor Lam said.

Fair access for women, girls and gender diverse people to community sport infrastructure is aligned with the Towards Gender Equity 2030 Strategy, which defines Council’s vision for the City ‘as a place where ‘all people in Maribyrnong flourish and live free from violence and discrimination and have equal status, rights, opportunities, representation and respect, regardless of their gender’.

The draft Fair Access Policy is in line with the State Government’s Fair Access Policy Roadmap which requires all Victorian Councils to have gender equitable access and use policies in place to be eligible to receive infrastructure funding.
