Exploring the City of Maribyrnong

The City of Maribyrnong is home to over 150 open spaces that cover more than 307 hectares of land. The school holidays are a perfect time to take a casual stroll or a more challenging adventure through many of the City’s parks, open spaces and walking trails.

Maribyrnong River Trail
The Maribyrnong River Trail is a shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists along the banks of the Maribyrnong River, running from the City of Brimbank through to the City of Maribyrnong. The trail is mostly flat, stretches 25km and boasts great views along the river. With various points to enter and exit the trail and loads to see along the way, it offers both walkers and cyclists the chance to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a more challenging adventure along the riverside.
Cranwell Reserve
Cranwell Reserve is a large open space in Braybrook that provides great views along the Maribyrnong River, and provides safe access to the Maribyrnong River Trail via a new 330 metre path. The Reserve also includes a designated dog off-lead area and amenities – the perfect place to explore with your pooch!
Footscray Park
Footscray Park is a beautiful large green open space along the bank of the Maribyrnong River, full of walking paths, colourful gardens, lawn areas and a dedicated dog off-lead area. It also boasts great views of the Melbourne CBD skyline, Flemington Racecourse across the River and of course, the mighty Maribyrnong River itself. The Park is a wonderful space to stroll and relax in, and also provides access to the Maribyrnong River Trail for those keen to extend their walk or ride along the water.
Cruickshank Park
Cruickshank Park is a bustling park along Stony Creek, complete with a shared use path for cyclists and walkers, playgrounds and quiet green open spaces. Enjoy a stroll along the creek amongst the many native trees, observing the wonderful animals that call the area home – including Mimi the Australian Muttaburrasauraus, and in the spring you may even be lucky enough to hear the frogs calling!
Newells Paddock Wetland
Newells Paddock Wetland – just south of Footscray Park – is the perfect place to see some of Maribyrnong local bird life as many species call the Wetland home. After you’ve seen some of the local animals, including swans, ducks and geese, explore the area through the various paths and continue your adventure along the Maribyrnong River Trail.
Pipemakers Park
Pipemakers Park is a large open space along the banks of the Maribyrnong River, and comprises of Burton Crescent Reserve, Frog Hollow Wetland and Thompson Reserve. The Park is the perfect place to spend an afternoon wandering, with shared use paths throughout the area, connecting to the Maribyrnong River Trail, along with a playgrounds, art installations and an eco-museum. While you’re exploring the area, don’t forget to stop by the Wetland to see if you can spot some of the many birds and frogs that call the City of Maribyrnong home. If you feel like extending your adventure, jump on the Maribyrnong River Trail and head down to Burndap Park and relax along the bank of Burndap Lake.

The City of Maribyrnong is home to a wide range of parks, reserves, open spaces and walking trails – all at the fingertips of locals, and a drawcard of visitors to the area.
From the Maribyrnong River to Stony Creek and beyond, I encourage residents to get outdoors and explore all of the green open spaces here in their backyard.
