Council will be undertaking engagement on the best options for delivering a north-south cycling connection to deliver a safe environment for bike riders.

At a meeting on 17 October 2023, Council reaffirmed its commitment to consultation with the community before any infrastructure changes that may impact residential amenity are made.

In urging Council “take a breath” on trial bike infrastructure on Summerhill and Rosamond roads, Mayor Cr Sarah successfully moved Council undertake the necessary work, involving the community to come up with a solution to deliver a safe road network for all users.

“All inner city councils are struggling with integrating cycle lanes within existing networks that were not designed to accommodate them.

“As a Council, we need to do a deep dive, informed by our engineers on what’s possible, and in consultation with our community, so we are not at odds with each other when seeking to deliver on our overall commitment to safe cycling,” she said.

The like for like reconstruction of Summerhill Road and resurfacing of Rosamond Road will also proceed as part of Council’s commitment in the 2023/24 Budget prioritising the upgrade of five distributor roads in the City, with Mayor Carter noting the urgency around getting on with fixing these roads.

“Over time with increasing wet weather and heavy traffic use, a number of cracks and potholes have begun to appear, bordering on dangerous, which if left alone, will lead to further deterioration of the road surface increasing risks to all road users.”

Council officers have been asked to consider additional traffic calming measures, particularly along Rosamond Road, as part of the delivery of the resurfacing work there, while also reviewing and updating the Integrated Transport Strategy to support future consultation with the community on a practical north-south cycling corridor.
