The local council general election is taking place on 26 October, and Council will enter the Election Period on 12pm, 17 September until 6pm, 26 October.

During this period, Councils must comply with special arrangements to ensure a fair, equitable and transparent local government election in compliance with the Local Government Act 2020.

The Election Period Policy – which was recently updated to enhance compliance and formalise additional provisions to strengthen Council’s commitment to fair governance – prescribes what is prohibited during this time, and restricts decisions that could influence voters or significantly affect the incoming council.

Key amendments to the Policy include:

  • Prohibition of inappropriate decisions during the election period.
  • Clarification of provisions regarding public consultations, public meetings, civic and ceremonial events, and advisory committees.
  • Guidance on the use of council resources, events, and activities.
  • Provision of assistance and advice from the council administration during the election period.

During the Election Period, Council operations will be conducted differently to maintain adherence to this Policy.
