Cowper Street works to start next month
Published on 21 February 2024
Cowper Street improvement works will commence in late March 2024, with Council awarding the contract for the works at the February Council Meeting.
The Cowper Street Capital Improvement Project aims to improve community safety and accessibility by transforming the street into a functional and appealing thoroughfare. Key features of the plan include a new road surface, improved drainage, pedestrian footpaths and footbridge, greenery and landscaping, as well as lighting to enhance safety during the night-time.
City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said the upgrades will not only improve safety and accessibility, but will also contribute to the overall vibrancy and functionality of the area.
“Cowper Street plays a vital role in connecting the community to various recreational activities, community sporting clubs, local businesses, and the Footscray train station. This project represents a significant investment in our community's future.” said Mayor Lam.
“The current road is becoming increasingly degraded, drainage in the area is inadequate, and there is lack of proper pedestrian infrastructure. By prioritising improvements in road quality and pedestrian safety, we aim to enhance the overall quality of this area,” Mayor Lam continued.
These upgrades reflect Council’s dedication to delivering tangible value for the community and aligns with the Council Plan 2021-2025 by providing and advocating for integrated built and natural environments with access to open spaces that are well maintained, engaging, accessible and respectful of the community and neighbourhoods.
Works along Cowper Street are set to commence in late March 2024, with completion aimed for December 2024. Information about the Cowper Street road works and potential detours will be shared with local residents in advance of the works starting.
