Council elects youngest Mayor in its history

Maribyrnong’s new Mayor is Cr Anthony Tran, the youngest Mayor in Council’s history at the age of 22.
Cr Tran accepted the role in both English and Vietnamese at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 9 November, where he acknowledged his family and elders on whose shoulders he and others of his generation have stood/
“This is the highlight of my short life and an honour to be given this responsibility.
“I hope my election will inspire other young people – and especially those from diverse backgrounds – to also step up and take their place in the world, whether in sport, entertainment or politics,” Cr Tran said.
Cr Anthony Tran, who was Deputy Mayor from November 2020 to November 2021, is serving his first term on Council. The son of Vietnamese refugees, Cr Tran credits his parents for instilling in him the importance of community.
He hopes to improve local infrastructure, promote community safety and seeks to make mental health support accessible to all. His focus recently has been on empowering the youth, promoting the multicultural communities and supporting local business impacted by COVID-19
During the meeting, Cr Sarah Carter was elected Deputy Mayor by fellow councillors.
