News Chef Out West

The importance of food as a universal expression of culture and community is explored in a beautifully bold web series called Chef Out West produced by Maribyrnong City Council, which launched on Friday 16 July.

The series explores the culinary journey of six chefs from the inner west who share their gift to connect cultures and build social harmony.

Mirroring the diversity of the inner west, the nationalities of the featured chefs include: French, Ethiopian, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese. All share their unique stories of arrival in Melbourne’s west and their enduring passion for the local community that they serve.

The series will be launched on the City of Maribyrnong Facebook and Instagram pages on Friday 16  July, with a screening each Friday until 20 August. The six restaurants include:

  • Konjo
  • Chi Bao
  • Charlie's Pizza
  • Café Terroni
  • Blue Bamboo
  • Small French Bar

Chef Out West will also be available on SBS On Demand later in the year.

The series was supported by the Victorian Government’s Let’s Stay Connected Fund, devised to help communities stay connected during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and beyond.

Quote from Councillor Michael Clarke – Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong

Chef out West is a series to savour. The food on display is mouth-watering and confirms what we here in the west already know – our food offerings are arguably some of the best in Victoria. While individual journeys, each imbues a passion for our community and highlights the importance of supporting the recovery of small hospitality traders, who are the soul of our community.

Quote from featured trader – Abdul and Rosen, Konjo Café

All food has story behind it and flavours can talk to you. It’s a great way to discover culture.

Each of the six micro episodes is snack size, under four minutes in length, and has been lovingly put together by Melbourne Filmmaker Eli Dance Ali from Glitch media.
