Calling all change makers: Community Grants now open!
Published on 19 July 2021
Council is inviting local volunteer, community groups and organisations to apply for the 2021 Community Grants program to create the change they want to see in Maribyrnong.
With a total pool of $170,000, these grants aim to create social inclusion, help build an intercultural and intergenerational City, and engage people from diverse communities of all ages, social, and cultural backgrounds to participate in and contribute to community life.
“The Community Grants program is a great way Council can support local community groups and volunteers at a grass roots level,” Cr Michael Clarke, Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong said.
This year’s program aligns with Maribyrnong’s Council Plan 2021-2025 objectives and 2021 Community Grant Priorities, including a focus on encouraging First Nations led projects and initiatives to apply for support.
“We are looking for projects that have the potential to build resilience within the community in a post-pandemic world,” Cr Clarke continued.
Recipient of the 2020 Community Grant funding, Bronwyn Stephens from Rotary Donations in Kind said that the funding enabled their volunteer-run organisation to operate and continue to deliver their essential service despite the pandemic.
“The Community Grant funding from Council allowed Donations in Kind to implement COVIDSafe measures like hand sanitiser, cleaning chemicals and signage, which kept the warehouse operating throughout COVID restrictions,” Bronwyn said.
“The funding allowed us to continue to distribute essential items and pre-loved mobility aids, which would have been destined for landfill, to those less fortunate in tough times,” Bronwyn continued.
To further assist applicants this year, Council will be hosting two online information webinars.
Applicants are encouraged to devise projects that respond to local needs and issues and that build an inclusive community.
The program includes three grants categories:
- Small Grants (including Seniors Groups): up to $500.
- Medium Grants: up to $10,000 – projects with a focus on inclusion, wellbeing, sustainability and celebrating diversity.
- Large Grants: up to $20,000 – larger scale collaborative projects that respond to an issue or opportunity.
All applicants should read the Community Grants Program guidelines(PDF, 534KB) and are encouraged to contact Council’s Community Grants Officer regarding their proposed project, prior to submitting an application.
Applications close Monday 23 August 2021 at 5pm
