A thirst-quenching incentive: return your cans and get a refund
Published on 09 November 2023
Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) kicked off this week. The new State Government initiative provides a 10 cent refund for every eligible drink container returned. The scheme, which began on Wednesday 1 November, aims to reduce litter, create new economic opportunities, and turn drink containers into new recycled products.
Depending on the local refund point, Victorians will be able to choose whether to receive this refund in the form of cash, a retail voucher, an electronic refund, or to donate it to a charity or community organisation registered with the scheme.
There are four types of refund points across Victoria, however Maribyrnong will predominately operate over the counter points. At these locations, all you need to do is hand over your containers, the attendant will count them for you and then provide you with a refund.
Current Maribyrnong locations include:
- The Vin Wine & Spirits, Seddon
- Thirsty Camel, Maribyrnong
- Thirsty Camel, Braybrook
- Yarraville Community Centre, Yarraville
There is also one self-serve vending machine solution at HomeCo Braybrook.

It is important to note not all recyclable drink containers are eligible as part of the scheme. Accepted containers are ones that you might typically consume ‘on the go’ when you are outside, or away from home.
Eligible containers include:
- Aluminium cans
- Plastic bottles (excluding milk, juice and cordial containers)
- Glass bottles (excluding wine and spirit bottles)
- Paperboard cartons (under 1 litre)
- Steel bottles/cans
Top tips
- Keep the container in its original form – no need to crush
- Make sure it is completely empty
- If you include the lid ensure it is attached to the container
- Look out for the ‘10c’ mark on the container to see if it is eligible for refund
- Ineligible containers can still be recycled through your kerbside recycling bin.
