Maribyrnong is gearing up to host its first-ever Living Future Expo, a demonstration, and celebration, of Sustainability in Action. 

Visitors can expect to hear from experts who will empower with the latest science, take part in workshops that inspire sustainable practice, and walk away feeling motivated to make immediate changes for better self-sufficiency.

With a focus on the climate emergency, eco-conscious living and innovation, the Expo will showcase a range of Council initiatives, e-vehicles, community exhibits, and interactive experiences designed to educate and motivate.

Highlights of the day will include:

EVs as the Solution
Thinking of moving to all electric transport? Hear from industry experts from the Good Car Co, and Melbourne Powered on all things E-bikes and electric vehicles. Afterwards head out and test ride an E- bike provided by Rilu e-Bike, take a spin in an EV and check out the amazing deals on offer.


 11.30am Air Pollution and Action

In May 2023, Maribyrnong City Council declared a health emergency, in response to the impacts of air and noise pollution from heavy trucks using local roads.

Air Pollution expert Clare Walter will be unpacking the issues around air pollution and health. Maribyrnong Truck Action group will then talk about how the local community is responding to this critical issue locally.


Haakan Berefors - BeeKeeping 101
Haakan started beekeeping 2008 in Sweden and has been keeping bees for over 15 years. Haakan will introduce you to the key elements of bee keeping and how to start.

Did you know you can use gardening to cool your home? Using vines and trees around your home can shade your home in the summer and reduce your cooling costs. Strategically placing and choosing your trees can provide warmth in winter too.

Home chicken husbandry is making a global resurgence as people see the benefit of cheaper eggs, greater soil fertility and yes, even the companionship which comes from the having these vivacious ladies around the garden. But what if we can harness the power of chook to get them making compost, fertilising the garden, and doing pest and weed control? All while improving the quality of their lives? This workshop explains how while also covering the basics of chook care.

Wanting to get involved in action to reverse global warming, improve sustainability, and make the world a better place? Join over 10 local grassroots action groups and state campaigns to hear them pitch their campaigns and how you can be involved.

 1.30pm Elena Pereyra - Westside Cohousing 
WestSide Cohousing Collective is a resident collective looking to co-create a resident led, Community focused cohousing project in the inner west. The cohousing model is a type of ‘intentional community’ set in an urban housing context. Cohousing was established in Denmark in the 1960’s due to dissatisfaction with existing housing and fractured social support. Facing similar issues now, cohousing is gaining traction around the world, including across Melbourne. Join this workshop to find out what cohousing is (and isn't) and why so many are talking about it, creating it, and living it.
Adam Grubb - Edible Weed Walk

Many if not most common urban weed species of Melbourne are edible and can provide valuable and nutritious fresh food. Learn to enjoy dandelion, sow thistle, mallow, amaranth, wild onions, wild celery, stinging nettle and many more (with seasonal variation). Many weeds are used by health practitioners for their curative properties. Learn too about some of the ecological uses of weeds as soil improvers, soil indicators and compost additives.

Hear from Tim Forcey - My Efficient Electric Home about his new book based on the hugely popular Facebook group My Efficient Electric Home (MEEH).
Tim will unpack the key elements of his book that will help you on your electrification journey.

Anthony Broese van Groenou - Good Car Company and E-vehicles
The Good Car Company’s goal is to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles in Australia and in doing so, save thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions. With fuel prices rising steadily, it’s time for Australians to embrace electric vehicles. This workshop will give you the confidence to go electric.

 2.30pm Craig Castree - How Soil Health Affects Your Health

How Soil health affects your health: What you feed soil, you feed yourself, learn how we need to treat soil differently than we have for the past 100 years, we have had that wrong! This has caused a huge nutritional drop in the produce grown by the commercial producers using chemical and mechanical farming. This workshop will save your back, money, and health, and most importantly the environment, by learning new easy methods to use growing your own nutrient dense food that will give you better health, and less reliance on others for your food.

Don't miss out on our climate impacts panel to understand the local consequences to global climate change. GenWest unpacks 'Our Community, Our Voice: Lessons from the 2022 Maribyrnong Flood”. Sustain: The Australian Food Network highlights how the climate emergency threatens our food security. Lastly, discover the TAG: The Adaptation Game, an innovative way of preparing for climate shocks by gaming your personal and community adaptations.

Angela Ashley-Chiew - Community Advocacy 101

Discover the vital role of emails and phone calls from everyday voters like you and me, aka constituent advocates, in shaping Australia's climate policies. Learn tools to effectively communicate with lawmakers, ensuring your voice helps drive meaningful action against climate change.

 4.00pm Climate Emergency Reset
This panel brings together David Sprat from Breakthrough who paints a chilling picture of global warming, Dr Adam Cardilini from Climate Rescue Accord who'll outline the new goals needed to avoid climate catastrophe, and Mathew Wright from Pure Electric Solutions lead author of Zero Carbon Australia to review how we convert our grid to 100% renewable energy 15 years on from the original plan and the threat the new solar feed in charge will have on reaching these goals.
