HRAFF Westside - A Wholesome Gang
As part of Council's Festival City program, the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival presents the exhibition A Wholesome Gang.
Awak Rech Kongor is a South Sudanese Dinka woman, an intersectionalist, abolitionist and an avid mental health advocate for young people within the South Sudanese community. Utilising storytelling and visual narrative to voice to, highlight and or uplift and otherwise marginalised existence and community.
Shot and edited by artist Joshua Sims, this photographic series follows a small documentary produced by Awak Rech Kongor in 2020, on the subject of wholesomeness and "gang".
Featuring Awak's grandmother (pictured), Ayen William Garang Dut, as well as friends and family, Awak grew up in St Albans.
The photographic series hopes to demonstrate and contextualise a deep longing for understanding and of isolation by being misunderstood.

The exhibition runs from Thursday 4 May to Monday 8 May 2023.
