Aboriginal Flag
The Aboriginal flag was proclaimed on 14 July 1995, and was first flown in Adelaide on National Aborigines Day on 12 July 1971. The Aboriginal flag was designed by Mr Harold Thomas.
What does the Aboriginal flag represent?
The black represents Aboriginal peoples.
The red represents the earth and the significant connection that Aboriginal peoples have with the land and country. It also represents the colour ochre which is ceremonially significant.
The yellow represents the sun as the giver of life.
Torres Strait Islander Flag
The Torres Strait Islander flag was proclaimed on 14 July 1995. The flag is the design of the late Bernard Namok who entered a competition that was organised by the Island Coordinating Council.
What does the Torres Strait Islander flag represent?
The green represents the land of the Torres Strait.
The blue represents the seas of the Torres Strait.
The two thin black lines represent the Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The five pointed star represents the five distinct language and cultural groups of the region and is an important symbol for navigating the seas. It also represents peace.
The Dhari headdress represents the Torres Strait Islander peoples and is used in cultural ceremonies.
