Footscray Central Business District Shopping Precinct

Few suburbs of Melbourne are more unique than Footscray. Footscray’s Central Business District (CBD) is a much loved part of our City and attracts many people from across metropolitan Melbourne for many reasons.

Take a stroll through its bustling streets and narrow laneways and uncover hidden bars, chic apartments, microbreweries, quirky shops and creative hubs.

We recognise visitors and traders have not always been happy with the way the Footscray CBD presents, and it was one of the points respondents made in the last annual community survey.

We’ve heard your concerns and are working to improve the Footscray CBD area. Find out what Council is doing in this area below

Homelessness and antisocial behaviour in the Footscray CBD

Footscray’s Central Business District (CBD) is a much loved part of our City and plays a lot of roles to many parts of our community, including for those experiencing homelessness.

It’s important to note that homelessness and sleeping rough are not a crime.  Those sleeping rough often occupy spaces which are close to support services and where they feel connected to the local community.

Further, while Council has Local Laws in place which ban the consumption of alcohol in the Footscray CBD, being drunk is not a crime.

Ultimately social support is required to support members of our community – which is the responsibility of the State Government. We call upon the State Government to properly fund outreach workers to work with rough sleepers and those experiencing homelessness.
