Maribyrnong Defence Site

Council is calling for the commencement of planning and development for the 128-hectare Maribyrnong Defence Site located in the Maribyrnong River Valley, about 10km from Melbourne CBD.

The planning and development of this site has the potential to facilitate:

• Increased housing supply, choice and affordability.
• New public access to the riverfront and new open space.
• Restoration of significant heritage buildings and spaces.
• A range of new community spaces, transport options and employment opportunities.

The site contains areas of significant contamination including legacy asbestos materials. The Department of Defence has employed contractors to manage the disposal of the contaminated material.

Key ask

Council is seeking to work with the State and Federal Governments to ensure the planning and development of this site includes new homes, jobs, open space and community facilities.
