Creative West
Creative West will be a large-scale performing arts venue, a new library, and park that will support the growth of creative industries in Melbourne’s West and further establish Footscray as a thriving area to live, work, do business and play.
This much-needed facility will provide the community, artists and creatives access to the latest technology for learning, artistic and cultural pursuits as well as being a vibrant centralised space for the Footscray Priority Precinct.
It will also stimulate and drive economic, employment and business outcomes by driving foot traffic and engagement with Footscray. Creative West will position itself as the premier gateway venue to the West.
The City of Maribyrnong initially sought $3 million from State or Federal Government to support the detailed business case and feasibility study, including schematic designs for Creative West.
A step closer
In January 2025, the Federal Government recognised the project's importance by committing $5 million as part of the urban Precincts and Partnership Program to transform urban spaces to meet the needs of growing communities. Maribyrnong City Council will match the Federal contribution.
The $10 million will be used will support the establishment of an advisory steering group – made up of community stakeholders, including representatives from Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, Victoria University, Creative Victoria, and local traders – along with design initiation, and schematic and detailed design in preparation for future construction.
Investment opportunity
This joint investment between Local, State and Federal governments will support greater economic development, employment and urban renewal. Council is ready to contribute funding, land and civic services to the project.
Why do we need Creative West?
- There are no purpose-built 500+ seat performing arts theatres in the greater western area.
- It is a regional advocacy priority, not just for the City of Maribyrnong City Council but all western municipalities.
- Activation in central Footscray will help address concerns around personal safety by driving foot traffic, particularly at night.
- Performing arts seats per capita in Melbourne’s east outnumber spaces in the western metro region two to one.
Benefits
- Creative West will support a thriving cultural and creative economy in Melbourne’s West.
- It will support the growth of an inclusive all age’s night economy for Footscray.
- It will establish a fit-for-purpose, place-making project for Footscray to drive urban renewal and economic activity.
