Council is continuing to improve the bicycle connection along the Maribyrnong River Trail by installing new lighting between the Kensington Railway Bridge and the Hopkins Street Bridge.

The works include:

  • Installation of new light poles, equipped with energy efficient LED fittings and integrated solar panels.
  • Reinstatement of disturbed areas.

The new lighting will assist commuters to safely navigate the River Trail on their early morning starts and late finishes, as well as anyone wanting to head out for a walk, run or ride before or after work.

Note: lighting equipment specified in environmentally sensitive locations has been selected based on its ability to:

  • reduce/control upward glare.
  • adjust/control illumination level.
  • utilise lighting shields fixed to the light fittings that cut off light from entering habitats
  • operate with motion sensor activation, which enables the light to dim automatically when there is no activity in the area.
  • turn off all the lights automatically at a designated time each night.

Officers are undertaking a further assessment of the Newell Paddock interface with the Maribyrnong River Trail to determine the best lighting solution for this area.
