Originally built in 1942, the existing pavilion has undergone various modifications over the years, but in 2009 the pavilion no longer met contemporary standards for safety and accessibility and was deemed unusable. The renewal project has included a thorough structural assessment of the existing facility, deeming it unfit for renovations, followed by the development of a design that aligns with modern building codes and standards. Key design elements will incorporate universal design principles and provide gender-neutral amenities, ensuring inclusivity for all users.
Why is Council investing in this project?
In 2015, a grassroots campaign by local residents successfully revived interest in the Footscray Trugo Club, demonstrating significant community support for the sport and the associated facilities. In 2021, Footscray Trugo Club was recognised for this work, receiving the Active Maribyrnong award at Council’s Civic Awards ceremony.
In response, the Council allocated $100,000 to cover costs related to the structural assessment, concept design, and detailed design phases, setting the groundwork for future construction efforts.
The Footscray Trugo Pavilion Renewal Project aims to revitalise this community asset that has historical value, while also addressing the evolving needs of the Footscray Trugo Club.
The detailed design development phase was completed in July 2024 after two years of investment in the design process. These efforts focused on creating a modern and functional facility that supports the Club's activities and enhances community participation.
The detailed design package has been finalised and approved by the Footscray Trugo Club, allowing the project to progress to the next stages.
