Distributor Road Improvement Project

  • Project typeRoad Upgrades
  • Project value$7 million
  • Project scheduleJune 2023 - 2024
Somerville Road VMS Board

As part of our commitment to maintain the local road network, we’re giving five high traffic roads across the municipality a ‘face lift’. We’ll be re-sheeting or resurfacing Somerville and Rosamond roads, Mitchell Street, and Churchill Avenue, with a full reconstruction of Summerhill Road to follow, as part of a multi-million dollar Distributor Roads Upgrades Project.

These five roads carry high volumes of traffic into, through and out of the municipality. Over time, cracks and potholes have appeared allowing water to seep into the sub-strata undermining the road integrity.

By re-sheeting or resurfacing these high traffic areas now, we can improve and restore the condition of the road pavement, extending their life expectancy.

Re-sheeting and resurfacing involves removing the existing surface and replacing it with a new layer of hot mix asphalt. By doing this work we will also be removing any rubber or oil build up ensuring the road itself is safer to drive on, helping prevent accidents on these high traffic routes.

There will be some noise and disruption associated with these works, which will all be undertaken at night, but we will do our best to minimise this.

You’ll find more information on each project in the accordions below. During this time, the State Government will be conducting additional road and rail works as part of the West Gate Tunnel project, learn more.

Summerhill Road, Footscray

As at late June kerb and channel works have begun in the section of Summerhill Road between Ballarat Road and Eden Street to improve drainage and driveway access to properties.

These works will take around three weeks to complete, weather dependent.

There will be some noise and dust from the use of heavy machinery and breaking up of the underlying rock.

Our contractors will do their best to minimise this to reduce the impact on residents.

Crews will be working between 10am and 2pm during the day. Night works will be undertaken between 8pm and 11pm, weekdays. Some weekend daytime work may be required.

The kerb and channel work is being undertaken in sections moving along the length of Summerhill Road over time.

There will be some restrictions on property access while crews are working outside individual properties.

Parking away from the work zone will help us expedite these works.

Road resurfacing works will follow and are expected to be completed before the end of the year. More details will be provided ahead of time.

FAQs

Will I receive a notification in advance of any works starting?

Yes. We will provide a detailed notification about the works and detours 10 business days prior to works beginning.

Why do works need to be done at night?

Because we are working on roads that carry high volumes of traffic, we’ll be working at night to minimise any traffic disruptions and support residents to come and go from their properties.

This also means we can work quicker and get finished faster.

We will need to use lights and reverse beepers to keep our crews safe, but we will do our best to minimise any impacts on neighbours.

What if it rains when works are scheduled?

Road re-sheeting work is weather dependent, can be delayed due to wet weather and is highly dependent on the temperature. If works are impacted by weather, works will need to be rescheduled and residents will receive further notification from the contractor.

Why aren’t the road lines marked immediately after asphalting?

To ensure that new line marking adheres to the freshly laid asphalt, this is scheduled a few weeks after the road re-sheeting has been completed.

Will I receive a notification about the permanent line marking work?

Not normally, no. This is because the road needs to be dry for us to do this. Because it is dependent on the weather it is normally scheduled at short notice, without much time for us to advise you.

The line marking process is very quick and relatively quiet. It is generally undertaken during the night. Temporary line marking will be in place until the permanent lines are reinstated.
