Cruickshank Park

Council is set to begin work towards installing a memorial for the late Peter Anderson, a renowned community member who dedicated over five decades worth of work towards transforming Cruickshank Park from a wasteland into the vibrant and decorated community park it is today.

The memorial will include a rotunda within the park, a paving stone commemorating Peter’s contributions, and a virtual storyboard detailing his impact.

Background

At the September  2024 Council Meeting, Council endorsed the Friends of Cruickshank Park’s proposal to erect a memorial honouring Peter Anderson in Cruickshank Park.

Peter Anderson was a devoted community member known for his efforts in preserving and enhancing Cruickshank Park in Maribyrnong. In 1968, Peter first approached Council with a vision to transform a neglected wasteland behind his property into a public park. Over the course of more than five decades, Peter was instrumental in converting a dusty quarry site into a vibrant community space, now featuring lush green lawns, Stony Creek, and willow trees.

In recognition of his dedication, Peter, along with his wife Lola Anderson, were honoured with the 2021 Maribyrnong Citizen of the Year Award for their lifelong commitment to the Park. Peter passed away in August 2023, leaving a lasting legacy on the City of Maribyrnong.

Council frequently receives requests from the public and developers to establish memorials for individuals or events in public spaces. To address the evolving social and cultural landscape, the City’s Memorials in Public Open Spaces Policy outlines clear guidelines for submitting and assessing such proposals. This ensures transparency and proper management of future monuments.

The Peter Anderson Memorial will celebrate an individual who made a significant impact on the City, with the memorial’s location reflecting his legacy. The project will proceed through detailed planning and design phases to ensure it accurately represents Peter’s contributions to Maribyrnong and inspires future generations to value and care for our public spaces.
